Listening with intention was a strong focus of today’s class. I’m sure you recognize the importance of being able to focus on and attend to sounds—vocal and otherwise. This ability can affect our everyday life in many ways: attending to conversation, listening for directions, enjoying the sounds of nature, recognizing sounds of caution, etc.
We also worked with phonemes (small units of speech that correspond to letters in the alphabet) today with Apples and Bananas. Thus, the awareness that language is composed of these small sounds is termed phonemic awareness. The children are led to concentrate on a specific phoneme and to discover how it sounds and feels when spoken in isolation. Looking in the mirror supports children’s understanding of the articulation of these sounds. Phonemic awareness is crucial in laying the groundwork for learning to read and write.
P.S. Be sure to read Family Activity #6 for ideas of ways your child can make an original city statue. Bring your child’s work of art to class next week to display.
